Book Review of The Girl’s Guide to the Apocalypse by Daphne Lamb.
First of all, I love the title of this book. It’s what made me want to read it. I was expecting our heroine to be this kick-ass woman and that wasn’t the case. At least not in the beginning. The main character, Verdell, is a selfish, sarcastic, underachieving office worker. Honestly, she’s a real asshole. She’s barely surviving the apocalypse and seems to be getting by on pure, dumb luck. And still, she is one of the nicest people in this book. She still retains a shred of human decency whereas the rest of the characters have lost all their marbles when the apocalypse hit.
If you can get over the hurdle of Verdell not being the usual cookie-cutter good guy, I think you will enjoy this book as much as I did. I loved the over the top, ridiculous scenarios where it seems that no one has noticed that the world has ended. Verdell is the only one that is still keeping things in perspective. Everyone else is still holding on to their silly rules and routines like gluten-free diets, office hierarchy and social media bullying. This book had me laughing out loud several times and I loved Verdell’s sidekick, her boss Robert. Robert, who lives strictly by the rules of his old company’s risk management manual and constantly threatens Verdell with her upcoming employee review. It was a great, fun read and I look forward to more work from Daphne Lamb.
We had mentioned in our video review that The Girl’s Guide to the Apocalypse will be published Sept 1st but it is already available 🙂
Happy reading!
