Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
Live the Cute Life – Episode #19: Throne of Glass Book Review
Coco: Welcome to “Live the Cute Life”. I am Coco.
Izzie: And I’m Izzie. Today we will be reviewing “Throne of Glass” by Sarah J. Maas.
Coco: Yes so what is this books about?
Izzie: It’s a young adult fantasy book. It’s about this amazing, world-renowned assassin. She’s an 18-year-old girl and she’s in prison.
Coco: A slave camp.
Izzie: Yes, a slave camp and she’s been there for a year and she is serving on a lifelong sentence. She is supposed to die there.
Coco: Now the king is looking for a champion and he’s holding this competition. Different people from his kingdom get to have participants in this competition. His son decided that the assassin is going to be his champion.
Izzie: Yes. The prince makes a deal with her, gets her out of jail in exchange for – she has to win the competition to be the king’s champion and then serve him four years and then she has her freedom.
Coco: If she loses, she has to go back to the prison camp where she will most likely die. So now we’re going to be talking about the book so spoiler alert – if you haven’t read the book, check it out and come back.
Izzie: Yes, spoiler alert. Did you like the book?
Coco: I loved the book. I read the first one and I just kept going in. I bought the second book and I love the second book even more.
Izzie: Good. I’m glad to hear that because I’m going to give it a chance, the second book. Because I didn’t not like it. I had a hard time getting into it.
Coco: Really?
Izzie: I didn’t feel like the characters were that well-developed. I didn’t have empathy for the main character. I don’t know why.
Coco: That’s interesting.
Izzie: I couldn’t get that into it but enough, I still liked it. It’s still like a fun adventure book and she’s kick-ass. Enough for me to read the second since you already bought it. I’ll check it out.
Coco: No, I really liked it. Well she didn’t really get to show her assassin skills in the first book.
Izzie: Maybe that was one of the reasons.
Coco: The first book was a world setting book. So it sets up the world. There’s this bad king and he’s in-charge and he banned magic so nobody can use magic. But lo and behold, he is using magic to control the population.
Izzie: I think there used to be like fairies and other magical beings that have been eradicated. And there’s kind of a hint that the main girl, the assassin, Celaena, is other than human. Like she might have – that’s what I got. We don’t know yet.
Coco: I don’t know if I should spoil it for you because I know, I read this in the second book. I thought it was really cool. I don’t know if my review is like “of two books in one”.
I’m blurring between what happened in the first book and the second book but I really liked it. I liked the tension between the love triangle between Celaena and Chaol.
Izzie: You know I don’t like love triangles. That’s another problem I had.
Coco: I don’t know. I thought it was really cute. I put myself in her shoes and like “Oh these two guys are after her.” It was really cute.
And you can tell from the guard, Chaol, he really likes her but he’s like “I can’t.” He’s like “She’s an enemy beacuase he’s the king’s guard.”
Izzie: Yes. She’s an assassin, an enemy of the kingdom, pretty much.
Coco: He’s like “No I can’t like this girl.” But he keeps falling in love with her and he is impressed by how she fights and how strong she is and stuff like that. I thought it was really cute. And then in the second book, it gets even better. Because in the second book, they go into the dark magic that the king is using and she is trying to solve the mystery and then show that she’s has fae powers and she is part of the thing.
Izzie: So there’s more backstory about her.
Coco: Right and not only that, I love the second one because there’s real romance in the second one.
Izzie: That’s another problem that I had. Not enough romance in this one and there was a love triangle. I hate being conflicted like “No, this is your one true love and that’s who you’re going to worry about.” This is the thing about being another person in there. But she’s still hesitant to be in a love triangle. How she manages it, it was very grown-up and not whiny and like “Oh poor me, who should I choose?” I like that. She didn’t resort to that at all.
Coco: She pretty much she cut it off with the prince. She’s like “I could never be with the prince.”
Izzie: If I’m the champion.
Coco: She cut it off the prince for his own good, not even just for herself. And then in the second book, she’s like she goes all in with Chaol.
Izzie: Well you’re ruining it. You give it away. What was wrong with you?
Coco: I thought you’re not going to read it. You aren’t sold.
Izzie: Remember, we’re doing the review of the first book, not the second one.
Coco: I’m sorry. I’ll stick to the first book but we’ll do the whole series later.
Izzie: How dare you? I didn’t read the rest of the series.
Coco: Spoiler alert for you!
I really like the second book and I was looking forward to get into the third book. But then I saw there’s like five books and I don’t have the time to sit down and just gobble up all the other three books. so I’ll stop at the second book for now.
Izzie: But you definitely want to read the third book?
Coco: Yeah I definitely want to read the third book.
Izzie: Okay. Well nice that there’s more romance in the second one then I will check it out then.
Coco: Definitely more romance and it’s really cute.
Izzie: Hey I liked it enough for me. So like I will check it out.
Coco: And there’s like cool elements. There’s like hidden passages, she has to solve a riddle, she has a cool best friend that’s pretty kick-ass. And there’s two good guys – the prince is a good guy, the guard is a good guy even though they’re working for the king.
There’s a lot of mysteries that I still interested in. I’m looking forward to figuring them out.
Izzie: Okay, very cool.
Coco: I give it two thumbs up. Go check it out.
Izzie: My review and star-wise, I would give it three.
Coco: You read three’s?! I don’t read three’s, I give it a four. Definitely read it.
Izzie: Sounds good. Thank you for hanging out with us. Please subscribe, keep checking our videos. Leave comments – that would be great, if you liked it as much as she did or like me.
